Today, electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, etc. are everywhere, and they all produce EMF radiation. Concerns are well documented in the media, but should you be worried?

What is EMF Radiation?

EMF radiation is short for electric and magnetic field radiation. The sun, since its creation, has been sending out waves that create EMF radiation. The visible light we can see from the sun is actually the EMF energy radiating out.

When indoor lighting and power lines spread across the world at the turn of the 20th century, scientists discovered they were sending off EMFs just as the sun does. More recently, and with advancements in technology, medical equipment like CT scans and X-rays have also been found to emit EMFs.

With over 90 percent of the world having access to electricity, and so many electronic devices and appliances around us, there is a lot of EMF radiation exposure. There are also  two different types that you might be exposed to:

  • High-frequency EMF radiation: this type has an ionizing effect and can damage DNA or cells directly. They are typically found in medical devices such as X-ray machines and CT scanners, albeit only in small amounts. Other sources include radioactive elements and UV radiation from the sun or tanning beds.
  • Low- and mid-frequency EMF radiation: contrary to the high-frequency type, this one is non-ionizing. Non-ionizing EMF radiation comes from both human-made and natural sources. One example of the latter is the earth’s magnetic field. For human-made EMF, there are two further types:
    • Extremely low-frequency EMF (ELF-EMF): this can come from a variety of sources, such as power lines and some personal appliances such as electric shavers, hairdryers, etc.
    • Radiofrequency radiation: this radiation is emitted from wireless devices, like your smartphones, tablets, and laptops. It can also come from radio and TV signals, satellite stations, and MRI machines.

 

What Can EMF Radiation Do to You?

Although EMF radiation is almost everywhere around us, scientists generally agree that EMF is rarely fatal. However, health implications that warrant attention have been observed.

High-frequency EMF radiation can damage our DNA and cells, especially from long exposure.

Low and mid-frequency EMF radiation have also been measured in tests in which some symptoms have been found. They include:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Memory loss
  • Loss of concentration
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Nausea
  • Skin burning and tingling

 

In even more severe cases, glioma, a type of brain cancer and a specific type of leukemia have been observed. The consensus is that there needs to be more monitoring to confirm that these severe cases are the direct result of EMF radiation.

 

EMF Radiation Protection?

Generally, EMF radiation risks are low for more lifestyles. But, some EMF radiation protection measures may help those concerned about their exposure levels. Here are some approaches you could take:

  • For low- and mid-frequency EMF radiation, reduce use of electronic devices.
  • For high-frequency EMF radiation, limit exposure to X-rays and other medical equipment as well as to direct sunlight.
